NSW Parliament House - Sydney

Overview

This multi-faceted Construct Only project was carried out in a high-security, occupied building with multiple stakeholders and required flexible and proactive scheduling.

The Scope involved:

  • The removal of asbestos containing membrane and the installation of a new Wolfin roof membrane system

  • Design and construction of temporary edge protection to secure the building perimeter installation of new balustrades

  • Replacement and recommissioning of plant across three rooftop levels.

  • Replacement of a large glazed atrium, which has involved an exhaustive design and certification process.

The four key principles that were implemented to optimise the program included:

  • Noisy works planned outside of normal building operations and quieter works during the week to increase onsite productivity

  • Material handling was planned outside of business hours

  • All work to balconies were programmed outside of Parliament sitting day blocks

  • Craneage for bulky items such as the glazing, frames and cooling towers were programmed on weekends to ensure stakeholders were still able to access the building during the week.

To overcome the issues posed by limited space onsite, our In-house Procurement Team mapped low-risk suppliers and pre-ordered materials for storage in our interim storage yard. These items were delivered to site when required to eliminate logistic or supply chain risks that could delay the project and maximise the available space to coordinate multiple trades.

During the works, we had to stop the project for three weeks during the Sydney COVID lock down, however, once back on-site, we amended our resourcing plan to make up for the delays and carried out the works concurrently across multiple levels. We ensured the Works were delivered with minimal delays while minimising movement in the building during business hours.
